ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assistant County Attorney representing the State of Iowa and Jasper County in the professional, aggressive and ethical handling of assigned cases, investigations and criminal matters filed in Jasper County, Iowa. Perform with excellence all attorney functions in assigned cases, including all phases of trials, hearings, depositions, investigatory evidence-gathering procedures, and other proceedings; make appropriate charging and other decisions; exercise good judgment in the disposition of cases consistent with justice, public safety, the well-being of victims and applicable law; prepare and file court documents and pleadings; perform legal research; competently evaluate evidence; interview witnesses and evaluate witness demeanor and credibility; assist law enforcement officers in criminal investigations; communicate effectively; available 24/7 to provide after-hours advice by telephone or in person to law enforcement officers (including preparing and reviewing search warrants, child in need of assistance removal orders and other related documents); proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Karpel, Power Point Presentations and other business related computer software; comply with all office policies; and performs related professional duties as required by the County Attorney.
Must be of good moral character and be licensed by the Iowa Supreme Court to practice law in the State of Iowa. Have knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law; of relevant Iowa Code sections, of the Iowa Rules of Evidence, Criminal Procedure and Civil Procedure, the Iowa Code of Professional Responsibility for Lawyers, and Federal and Iowa constitutional law principles relating to criminal procedure, criminal law and Iowa Code Chapter 232; possess knowledge of effective trial practice methods, tactics, strategy and procedures.
Selected candidate will be required to complete a background check, pre-employment drug test prior to employment and will be required to live in Jasper County within 180 days from date of hire. Moving expenses can be negotiated.
